Tea Factory.

Kipchabo Tea Factory was established in 2010 as the tea processing and value addition subsidiary of Nyayo Tea Zones Development Corporation. Nyayo Tea Zones is a state corporation under the Ministry of Agriculture established enhance forest conservation by creating buffer zones of tea and assorted trees to act as buffers around the gazetted forests.  The Corporation’s mandate also includes the establishment, management and maintenance of tea processing factories to process and add value to the Corporation’s teas. Kipchabo Tea Factory was thus established in fulfillment of this mandate.

Kipchabo Tea Factory is designed as a three-line factory with an annual capacity of 18 million kilograms of green leaf per year. The main aim of the Kipchabo tea factory is the production of CTC black tea. Beginning November 2014, the Commercial unit has introduced brands into the local market that include Chabo Loose Tea, Chabo Tea Bags, Eco Tea Loose Tea and Kipchabo FDS Loose tea.

In this regard, a people-centered conservation model has fueled the success of this organization’s corporate responsibility as its non-negotiable and deliberate effort to provide income and livelihoods support to the peri-forest communities.

The Nyayo Tea Zones Development Corporation buffer conservation model has grown into an innovative and successful agro-ecological venture that strikes a balance between prevention, mitigation and rehabilitation of gazetted forests and provides livelihoods support to over 12,000 peri-forest communities on a daily basis

Climate change & Food Security

The Corporation mandate of forest conservation and environmental protection addresses the negative effects of climate change and helps in its mitigation and adaptation.

Livelihood support & Employment creation

The Corporation’s current strategic plan is aligned to the Kenya Kwanza bottoms-up objective as it aims at transforming the livelihoods of peri-forest communities as partners in forest conservation.

Commercial & Value

Addition Units

Established in 2014, NTZDC commercial department is responsible for value addition of the Corporation’s products across the value chain. Currently, the department sells 10% of tea produced from Kipchabo Tea Factory locally. The department is also responsible for tea auction process that deals with tea exports sold through the auction. The main purpose of establishing the administrative division was to create value addition opportunities for NTZDC teas by introducing new brands so as to optimize value from the market.
