Twelve bright but needy students drawn from the Kipchabo Factory catchment received Kshs. 486,000 in school fees sponsored by Nyayo Tea Zones Development Corporation and the factory. The cheque presentation event was held at the factory grounds on 31st January 2022 led by the Managing Director.
In his remarks, the MD indicated that the Corporation implements Corporate Social Responsibility activities in the areas where it operates aimed at building good corporate citizenship and address the welfare of neighbouring communities who are critical partners to the achievement of the conservation mandate. In addition to the Bursary Scheme, the Corporation’s CSR projects include donations of tree and tea seedlings to institutions, tree planting exercises, contributions to education events such as prize-giving days and construction of facilities such as classrooms and tea-buying centres. Other projects include improvement and maintenance of rural access roads, support to local water and health projects and donations to select humanitarian causes, among other activities.
The NTZDC/Kipchabo Tea Factory Bursary Scheme was started in 2021 and is now in its third year of implementation. The twelve secondary school scholarship beneficiaries are identified through a competitive and collaborative process that involves both the community members spearheaded by the factory CSR committee, and the factory management.
Managing Director reiterated that the Corporation would continue to consolidate its CSR activities across the operational areas by expanding the bursary scheme to benefit children with special needs and introduce an annual tree-planting and growing exercise around the factory catchment and the zones for more environmental impact.
